About Me

Hi, my name is Sebastian Ooi Wei Chern. I am a YangQin performer, passionate young composer, arranger and conductor based in Malaysia.

 

I am currently a member of the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers. I also have 15 years of experience performing in chamber and orchestra settings.

 

I started learning the piano at a very young age under the tutelage of Ms Patricia HC Lim. I was later introduced to the Yang Qin by Mr Teh Beng Huat. China Conservatory of Music accepted me as a Yangqin performance undergraduate student in 2010, and I studied under the tutelage of renowned YangQin performer Associate Professor Wu HuangHuang. I graduated in 2014. 

 

Participating in SoundBridge Festival 2015 as a performer was a pivoting point for me. I began my journey as a composer after the intricacies of composition attracted me.

 

In 2018, I resumed my study at the China Conservatory of Music, learning composition under the tutelage of Associate Professor Wang Jue.

 

My goal as a composer is to learn more about different musical cultures, idioms, and techniques, incorporating those elements into my music.
